Ural Thomas
Smile (2018)

Ural has been playing music in North Portland since the late 1950s. After a brief time opening for acts including James Brown and Otis Redding, Ural settled back into Portland and decided to maintain a low key DIY music career within his own neighborhood only. He recorded this home folk recording with a 10-year-old drummer and pressed just 300 copies of the single to prove to kids who hung out at his house that they could make anything happen. Ural built his house in the 1960s completely out of “stuff he dragged out of the Willamette River” and still lives in it, hosting jam sessions where folks as young as eight and as old as ninety participate.
